WELCOME TO THE NEW YORK VOLLEYBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION

BRINGING COACHES TOGETHER

June 12, 2019

Hello volleyball friends! We are almost there! School will be finishing up soon. As you all know, what a crazy time!! I just want to take this moment to say how great it was to see everyone in Lake George for the 2019 NYVCA Coaches Clinic – Fifth Year Celebration!

What a great group of coaches! Native New Yorker Alyssa D’Errico showed us why she is one of the best young coaches in the country. She makes all of New York proud. Matt Giufre from SUNY-New Paltz introduced many of us to “recycle” off the block. Easy to see why his teams are always near the top in New York!  Owego Free Academy’s Brittney Race speaks, and you understand why she is one of the top high school coaches in the northeast.

Sunday began with Rivier University’s Craig Kolek giving us great efficient blocking drills and practice drills showing why he has had such a successful career. Our clinic wrapped up with some great skills and drills from Siena coach Vilis Ozols. New York volleyball is better because of Vilis Ozols.

Special thanks to the people at Lake George high school – Brittany Jones, Kyle Manny, and Cathy Stanilka help us so much. We cannot do this without their help and support.  I would like to say thank you to NYVCA officers and board for all that they do throughout the year to recognize players and coaches.  Personally, I would like to thank AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer for not only her leadership but for stopping at our clinic this year during a very busy schedule.  Many thanks also to Kennedy Wells and the rest of the AVCA staff for their support throughout the year. Our organization would not flourish without a great partner like the AVCA!

So now we begin our 6th year! Recharge over the summer because we have so much to do keep this organization going! As always, we ask you all to get one or two new members for us each year. It would be so great to see more new faces from our coaching community in Lake George. We had so many great comments about our clinic this year and are excited for next year’s line-up of coaches. We already have state coaching legend Mary Jo Cerqua and top New York College coach Steve Pike lined-up with three others pending. It will be another great weekend of volleyball in Lake George in 2020.  May 15-17 is the weekend of next year’s clinic and we hope to see you there for volleyball and fellowship (and oh yes, the food and dancing by the lake!)

Enjoy your summer!

Hello Colleagues and a Happy New Year to you all!!

What a year it has been! Our membership continues to grow. We had our largest group in Lake George at our May clinic. We have started to share our organization on social media. It was a fantastic year with many first time teams at our New York State Championships in Glens Falls. I was honored to be a part of an outstanding Hall of Fame Class. Our group has continued to become a larger part of our volleyball community. With the help of NYVCA Treasurer Peggy Seese, all-state certificates were mailed to all of the all-state players. Finally we are now posting the New York State Coaches and Players of the year for each section. Thank you to all who help me across the state put this group together. A reminder to all that only members can have themselves and their players honored.

We look forward to great things this year! I have just spent 5 unbelievable days at the AVCA convention in Minneapolis. I had the opportunity to talk to other state leaders and I am excited about the things that we can do in our state to increase membership. We have a great lineup of coaches in Lake George for our May tournament. We are looking for over 100 coaches to attend!! Please tell your friends. It is a great opportunity to learn volleyball stuff and network with other coaches.

As we approach another exciting year of volleyball in New York, I would like to thank Kathy, Kennedy, and all of the staff at the AVCA for all that they do to support our organization. What we do can not be done without their support. I would also like to thank our board and officers for everything that they do to help build this organization. I am honored to work with such great people.

A reminder do a “double contact” and get two friends to join our organization this year! Best of luck this year and remember the NYVCA is here for you!

“Very Special…” – the phrase that comes to mind when thinking of this past weekend’s annual clinic in Lake George. Meeting new friends and spending times with old friends is one of the best parts of this weekend. With the help of our board, Lake George Volleyball, the Georgian, Kennedy and the AVCA and the great volleyball community across our state, our biggest and best clinic helped to spread the volleyball word. My memories include Coach Cal Wickens and his world of knowledge about so many facets of our sport, Coach Christi Kelsey bringing her class, knowledge and inspiration, getting to teach along my son Mike for two sessions, listening to rock star setting coach Lindsey Schlegel and the technical expertise of Kristin Baker.

Next year’s clinic is May 17-19, 2019 in Lake George. Please make plans to attend. We feel that you will be happy about the weekend that we put together.

The New York State Volleyball Coaches Association is full of momentum! We will continue to work for you – our membership. Please let us know if there is anything else that we can do for you. Enjoy your summer and we will see you in the fall!!!!
